Personal statements
What would you say is your greatest talent or skill? How have you developed and demonstrated that talent over time?
My greatest talent would probably be my listening skills and my reading skills in the classroom. It helps me when it comes to understanding assignments and all the information given to me. During my years in high school, as I progressed my learning facilitators began giving more lectures and helped my listening skills develop. When I am in a lecture class I usually take notes on the key points of the topic and it helps me later on when reviewing my tasks. I believe listening skills are an important part of effective communication.
Describe how you have taken advantage of a significant educational opportunity or worked to overcome an educational barrier you have faced.
One of the biggest opportunities I have had this year is being able to take the CNA program as an elective. It has made it a lot easier for me to begin my future education in nursing and it is giving me the experience I need to be successful in the nursing field. It is amazing that our school funds the program and makes sure we are using it to advance our education. It also gives 20 credits for the whole year rather than 10 like other electives so it has helped me catch up on missing credits. Another benefit for my education was having Personalized Learning Time, PLT to help me be on pace with all my classes. PLT gives you a free class period to go to which ever class you need help in or need catching up in. It has helped me a lot because I tend to wait until the last minute to finish my tasks.
Describe the most significant challenge you have faced and the steps you have taken to overcome this challenge. How has this challenge affected your academic achievement?
The biggest challenge I have had to face was how bad of a procrastinator I had become and how it affected my education and graduation status. During my first years of high school I got really lazy and never did any homework and I waited until last minute to turn in all my work or turn them in late. Before we didn't really have due dates but they have cut down and became very strict with them. This helped me realize if I didn't start turning in my assignments on time I would not be eligible to graduate with my class. It has motivated me to manage my time and focus on what is more important rather than spending my time watching TV I spend that time catching up on assignments I have not yet completed.
Describe your favorite academic subject and explain how it has influenced you.
My favorite subject would have to be history, I enjoyed it so much because it was so fascinating to learn about what happened before when we didn't have much technology and how they handled it. It also interested me how different everyone lived compared to how it is now. I struggled with history but my junior year in high school I had the best history teacher I could have asked for, I always looked forward to going to class to learn our next lesson. History helped me understand that all decisions have an outcome, some good and some bad, and how some people made history by making certain decisions.
